Gunter Schlierkamp, nicknamed The Gentle Giant, was born on February 2, 1970, near the city of Dusseldorf, in Germany. In the family of children, in addition to him, there were two more brothers and a sister. The boy was brought up according to the old farming traditions, since his parents were engaged in farming. Sports in his family were not taken seriously and considered a waste of time.
From an early age, Gunter helped parents in their large household. A few years later he went to work on a nearby farm, and his earnings were 50 cents per hour. This gave him the opportunity to buy new clothes so that he did not have to wear the clothes of his older brothers. This time was not easy for him and taught him patience and restraint.
Seeing the movie “ Download Iron ” with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role, 13-year-old Gunther Schlierekamp arrived in shock. He had a great desire to become big and strong. Then he bought weights and began to train. At that time he only worked on his hands. At the age of 16, Gunter Schlierekamp began working as a mechanic, and he had the opportunity to engage in a gym. The sportsman told Gunther Schlierekampa that he had good athletic inclinations. At that time, he weighed 77 kg. Conducting training in the gym 2 times a week, he began to prepare for the first competition. He trained without ceasing. His training took three hours, and sometimes even more. He allowed himself to rest only once a week. At that time, he believed that if he would train a lot, he would achieve great results. In 1988, Gunther first took part in amateur weightlifting competitions. The next five competitions in which he participated brought him only the first places.
In the spring of 1990, he won the amateur championship in Germany. In the same year, in the fall, he won the amateur world championship. Then, having achieved the best result, he decided to try himself in the adult group of weightlifters. Over the next 2 years, Gunther Schlierekamp trained hard, and in 1992 took part in the European Championship. He achieved the European title. In the same year he won the German championship. In 1993 he was awarded the title " Mr. Universe ."
Soon in 1994, he met his future wife Carmen. They were married together legally, but lived together for a short time, as they realized in the end that they did not fit together.
Gunther Schlierekamp’s preparation for the Olympic Games was not successful, as he did not become part of the 15 strongest. At that time, Gunther Schlierkamp got the idea that he was on the verge of collapse. People who admired and were proud of him turned away from him and ceased to believe in his strength and abilities.
In the spring of 1997, at the end of the Champions Night championship, Joe Vader turned to Gunther with a proposal for joint cooperation. Gunther Schlierkamp agreed to the proposed terms and signed an agreement with Joe Vader. In 2006, Gunther took part in the filming of the Hollywood comedy “Beerfest”.
